A sul da cidade de Singapura encontra outro local inesperado: o Haw Par Villa que é, na verdade, um parque temático dedicado à cultura e mitologia chinesas.
Construído em 1937 pelo empresário e filantropo Aw Boon Ahw e, entretanto, revitalizado, este parque tem diversos portais e pavilhões, mais de mil estátuas de deuses e divindades chinesas e de 150 dioramas gigantes – representações artísticas tridimensionais de cenas da vida real - que ilustram diversas cenas mitológicas e lendas chinesas e budistas. Entre os mais famosos estão o painel dos Vícios & Virtudes, ou as ‘Dez Cortes do Inferno’. Nesta última, algumas das esculturas são bastante bizarras e impressionantes ou, até mesmo, assustadoras, mas, ainda assim, vale a pena ver!
Regressando ao coração da cidade, está em plena zona de Chinatown e, como o nome indica, tudo faz lembrar a China, desde as lojas, aos coloridos edifícios coloniais, à comida e restaurantes. Curiosamente, e apesar disso, este bairro é conhecido por abrigar pessoas de diversas nacionalidades e culturas, bem como por incluir duas mesquitas árabes e um templo hindu, em que todos convivem harmoniosamente.
Este último é o Templo de Sri Mariamman, o templo hindu mais antigo da cidade, com uma arquitetura espetacular, onde não faltam as esculturas de divindades hindus, sempre coloridamente vibrantes. O contraste entre esta arquitetura tradicional e o cenário urbano e moderno que rodeia o templo é fascinante.
O Templo do Dente de Buda, que guarda justamente um dente de Buda, é um dos locais mais sagrados do país. Este imponente templo e museu de cinco andares oferece aos visitantes a oportunidade de explorar a história da cultura budista, contemplar a relíquia venerada, assistir a performances teatrais, explorar a biblioteca, desfrutar de um momento de tranquilidade numa casa de chá e maravilhar-se com a luxuosa e pormenorizada decoração, sala após sala. É, mesmo, um local fascinante que merece bem a visita.
